Scale of the Universe
Case Study
King's College Wimbledon wanted to transform one of their science staircases into a visually striking educational experience that would inspire curiosity and reinforce the scale and wonder of the universe. The brief was ambitious: create a journey from the microscopic to the galactic that could be experienced naturally while moving up the staircase.
The Challenge
The installation needed to communicate vast differences in scale in a way that was engaging, readable and durable within a busy school environment.
Because the design would travel across angled stair flights, landings and changing sightlines, careful consideration was needed to ensure the content remained coherent and impactful from multiple viewpoints. The school also wanted the piece to reward closer inspection, creating layers of discovery for students over time.
Delivery
The project was manufactured and installed entirely by our in-house team using precisely cut and printed rigid panels designed to perfectly follow the angles and geometry of the staircase.
The durable wipeable finish ensures the installation can withstand daily use while remaining easy to maintain and redecorate around if required, helping to protect the longevity of this highly detailed and visually impactful installation.
The Solution
Working closely with the Head of Science and the Estates team, we developed a concept that takes students on a visual journey from the micro to the macro; from microscopic structures through to planets, nebulae and distant galaxies.
Relative scales are woven throughout the design, sometimes prominently and sometimes hidden as subtle “easter eggs” for students to discover. Rich imagery, layered information and carefully considered transitions help create a sense of progression and exploration as the staircase is climbed.
The result is both educational and immersive, transforming a transitional space into something memorable and thought-provoking.
“We love the storytelling involved in this design, as well as the creative challenge it presented”
