Exploration Sculpture
Case Study
Wimbledon High School approached The Media Collective to create a striking centrepiece for the atrium of their new STEM tower. The installation needed to celebrate a former headteacher, who embodied the spirit of exploration, and incorporate both a commemorative plaque and a meaningful quotation from the head within the design.
The Challenge
The school wanted the piece to feel visually impactful without becoming overly literal or thematic. It needed to sit sympathetically within the contemporary architecture of the new tower while still drawing attention and creating a memorable focal point for students, staff and visitors.
The concept of exploration needed to be strongly felt through the experience of the installation itself, rather than simply stated through graphics or text.
Delivery
The project was designed, produced and installed entirely by our in-house team. Working closely with the school, architect and main contractor, we carefully coordinated the integration of the sculpture within the new building environment.
The result is a distinctive and thought-provoking installation that not only honours the school’s history, but also inspires future generations to remain curious, reflective and exploratory.
The SOlution
Our response was a suspended mirrored sculpture inspired by the shape and verticality of the tower itself. Formed from multiple reflective elements, the installation creates an ever-changing visual experience as light, movement and perspective shift throughout the day.
The mirrors constantly reflect different viewpoints to different observers, ensuring the piece is never static. In this way, the installation becomes a physical representation of exploration itself — dynamic, multi-faceted and inviting closer inspection.
